EGYPT – New Fast Patrol Craft Ordered From Turkey
On 21 September 2011, AMI sources indicated that the Egyptian Navy (EN) ordered six multi-role tactical platform (MRTP-20) patrol craft from Yonca-Onuk of Turkey. Under the terms of the contract, Yonca-Onuk would transfer technology and co-produce the craft. Five of the vessels would be built at Yonca’s facility in Istanbul, while the last unit would be built in Alexandria, Egypt.
MRTP-20 is currently in service with the Turkish Coast Guard. The 20.4-meter (66.9ft) patrol craft is powered by twin diesel engines and is capable of speeds in excess of 60-knots. AMI estimates the cost of the procurement will total approximately US$25.5M. The first craft could be delivered as soon as the end of October 2011. Regional newspapers have reported the class could be fully operational with the EN by 2014.
As to Egypt’s ability to carry out the fabrication of the last unit, Alexandria Shipyard has six construction slipways capable of up to 1,500-tons as well as possessing a facility for constructing glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) vessels. AMI believes this deal stipulation is a means of providing an influx of current technology into the Egyptian shipbuilding industry, which would serve to possibly stimulate the economy as it rebuilds itself.
AMI further believes that Turkey will continue to look east, as it markets many of its naval designs internationally. Egypt may only be the first of many new potential customers for these platforms and systems.
